Photographing Glencoe and Vallerret Base Layers
There are few better places to visit as a landscape photographer than Glencoe in Scotland. However, at this time of year, the temperatures can be low enough to make any unprepared photographer give up and go home. In this video, I will share the joy of landscape photography at one of Glencoe's most famous viewpoints and I also try out Vallerret's new range of merino wool base layers.
Scotland at Its Very Best
Photographers are attracted to Glencoe for all sorts of reasons. One of the biggest reasons is that there are so many amazing viewpoints that are easy to access. There are some great photographs to be captured from either your car or with just a short walk. However, for those photographers willing to be a little more adventurous there are almost limitless opportunities, especially if you chuck the variable weather into the mix.
One such viewpoint is an elevated view of Stob Dear (Buachaille Etive Mòr). It’s always been a favourite of mine and I find it hard not to photograph it if I’m visiting Glencoe. On my most recent visit, the forecast was predicting lots of fog, and I had high hopes of a temperature inversion, and even though this didn’t occur, it was still an amazing morning of photography.
Keeping Warm with Vallerret Base Layers
While it might have been a sunny day on Glencoe, it was far from warm. The lower temperatures did therefore give me the chance to share my thoughts on Vallerret’s new range of merino wool base layers. You will be familiar with Vallerret’s range of photography gloves, and I have previously featured them in my videos. I suffer from cold hands and for me, my photography gloves are as important as my camera. I’ve had a few trips out with the camera ruined because I’ve been cold and miserable.
With winter just around the corner, the release of these new base layers from Vallerret was good news to me and I was happy to put them through their paces during my adventures in Scotland. You can learn more about them and hear my thoughts on them in the video below.
If you’d like to purchase any of these base layers you can do so directly from Vallerret right here.

Vallerret Base Layers on Location
Those Vallerret base layers were warm enough and comfortable enough to allow me to take these on location photographs. I don’t think modelling is my strong point though. Perhaps I’ll stick to photography!

Bite-Size Blog Post #12 - Dartmoor Mini Adventures
In this bite-size blog post, I share with you some of the photographs I have captured on my recent ramblings around Dartmoor.
Exploring Dartmoor Locations New and Old
When autumn arrives and the number of daylight hours shrinks, I’m forced to focus my photography on local locations like Dartmoor. Well, I say “forced” but let’s face it, photographing Dartmoor isn’t exactly a hardship!
Now that autumn is over I thought it would be a good opportunity to look back on the Dartmoor locations I have photographed recently. I tried to balance my time between locations I know well and those that I know less well.
Of the locations I know, I’ve featured photographs from Rippon Tor and Holne Bridge. I haven’t captured anything spectacular or new from these locations, but they are firm favourites for me so I can’t resist the temptation to photograph them. Especially Holne Bridge. It’s such a nice location during autumn!
There are also some photographs from locations that I haven’t previously explored. Tunhill Rocks look like it could be a location worth exploring again. I think in the right conditions and light it could yield several good compositions. Bench Tor and Honeybag Tor are like Tunhill Rocks in that they will be worth visiting again.
Perhaps one of the most exciting locations I have visited recently is a new one for me and that is the area around Trendlebere Down. My first visit to the area was to walk the dog and it wasn’t my intention to check it out for photography. That visit coincided with the autumnal colours coming through and as I wandered about it soon became apparent that could be an excellent location for a spot of photography. The photographs below feature the stone bridges I found but the view higher up looking down on the woodland has plenty to offer as well.
Through my mini adventures around Dartmoor I’ve visited both old and new locations, but it’s the area around Trendlebere Down that I’m most looking forward to photographing next autumn.
5 Things I Love About the Nikon Z 7
In my latest video I share with you the 5 things that I love most about the Nikon Z 7 mirrorless camera. I will also tell you about some of the things I don't like and show you some of the images that I've been capturing with the Nikon Z 7 over the last few months.
Another Nikon Z 7 Review
Does the world really need another review video about the Nikon Z 7? This is a valid question and one you may well be asking. After all, I purchased the Nikon Z 7 almost a year after it was first released so there is already a stack load of Z 7 review videos.
Unlike when I purchased the Nikon D850 though, I decided not to make any specific vlogs or blogs about my purchase of the Nikon Z 7. So rather than make a song and dance about changing cameras I just never directly mentioned it. However, you are an eagle-eyed lot and my change of camera didn’t go completely unnoticed. A few of you asked why I moved from the Nikon D850 and what I thought about the Nikon Z 7 and I was happy to provide my reasons.
Now that I’ve had the camera for a few months I’ve decided the time was right to share my thoughts on this camera with a wider audience. I’m not going to repeat too much of what I’m going to say in the video but this isn’t a full review and I’m not trying to convince you all to go mirrorless! This video is just about me sharing what I personally like about the Z 7, some things that I don’t like and share a few images.
Whichever camera system you have, and even if you don’t agree with my choice and reasons, I still hope you took some value from watching it. I’d be really interested to hear your thoughts on mirrorless cameras, the Nikon Z system, and the future of DSLRs. Why not leave me a comment below.
Nikon Z 7 Landscape Photographs
The video included a number of landscape photographs that I’ve captured with the Nikon Z 7 which I’ve included below along with some of the shooting information which I hope you find useful.
